The artist, dressed in light summer clothes, looks at us questioningly with one blue eye and one green eye. For this self-portrait, Van Gogh used a cheap carrier – cardboard – on which he painted a layer of purple stripes. Unfortunately, the pigment has faded considerably over time and only vague pink stripes can be seen on the shoulders; Van Goghs careful colour composition has been lost. Originally, the purple background would have contrasted with his yellow straw hat. The Self-Portrait decorative cushion is a bolster cushion with a digital print of Van Goghs self-portrait.
